Programme structure
In-practice experience
Partnered with medical educators and approved GP teachers, you will be immersed into the world of primary care by completing one or two practice placements in accredited teaching practices.
College-employed registrars complete two six-month practice placements over the 12-month period. We will endeavour to place you in a rural or high needs practice for one of the six-month placements.
Practice and self-employed registrars typically complete one practice placement over the 12-month period.
The process is designed to assist you in the transition from secondary care hospital runs to caring for patients in a holistic way.
Seminars and workshop
In addition to clinical time, you will also participate in a range of learning activities, including interactive seminars and workshops, working with small groups and medical educators. Expect role-plays, presentations, small group discussions and video reviews, completed alongside other GPs in training.
Summative activities
By the end of the first year in GPEP, you will take the wealth of knowledge and experience you have acquired and apply it when sitting the GPEP year 1 written and clinical examinations.
Hours of work
Full time registrars will be required to work eight-tenths clinical time a week (approximately a 32-hour week) with one-day release for seminars and workshops. However, registrars have the option to work part-time, five-tenths clinical time a week (approximately (approximately a 20-hour week) and attend workshops.
